BHB Architects have conducted a comprehensive redevelopment of the Briggs of Burton Manufacturing Site in central Burton Upon Trent. The company which is one of the oldest established companies in the town, provides process engineering services across a number of sectors including brewing, distilling, food, and biotech.

Briggs of Burton had approximately 230 members of staff on site that were set over three office floor levels, with a large majority of the workforce utilising desk-based computer workstations. BHB Architects worked with Briggs initially following a competitive tendering process, with the client seeking to dramatically improve the quality of the internal working environments for staff and visitors alike.

The redevelopment proposals were progressed in a phased approach, firstly to ensure continuity of existing operations and secondly to tie in with Briggs’ ongoing capital expenditure programme.

Phase 1 related to the creation of new corporate office facilities with improved customer entrance and reception areas, new parking provisions, new meeting room facilities and new staff amenity and canteen provisions. Phase 2 involved the comprehensive refurbishment of the existing largest office floor plate, the second floor. It also included the existing main stair and circulation cores to the building. Phase 3 related to the internal refurbishment of the ground and first floor levels, once staff had been moved to the newly completed second floor. Phase 4 investigates the future development of adjacent plot areas for either additional business requirements or to generate profit for further investment.

Throughout the construction process, the site remained a live manufacturing facility and continued to operate fully. This required careful consideration of the construction phasing, particularly relative CDM regulations and H&S issues. BHB Architects provided both Architectural and Principal Designer services to Briggs.

Following the refurbishment of the interior spaces, the quality and spaciousness of the new working environment has greatly improved. Ancillary office provisions are also significantly better than previously, with more kitchen points, hand wash provisions and more numerous and spacious meeting rooms now available. All of this has enabled the company to continue to operate safely from the building during the recent pandemic.

CASE STUDY: Internal Wall Insulation

The Master’s House, St John’s Hosptial, Lichfield.

Assessment of historic fabric to ensure a secure understanding of the historic fabric, and how appropriate breathable insulat ions and secondary glazing could be sympathetically installed.

Solution: A breathable IWI Sheep Wool Insulation and lime mortar on wood wool. Sympathetic interiors following the completed installation of secondary glazing, breathable insulation, lime plaster and breathable decorations. The property has reduced its winter energy costs and enjoys a more comfortable thermal environment.

CAT A fitout Office project located in Birmingham City Centre which achieved Excellent under the BREEAM UK Refurbishment and Fitout criteria. Careful design decisions chosen alongside consulting with BREEAM Professionals allowed us to achieve the required Excellent BREEAM Rating and achieve a modern, flexible and focus driven working space interior fitout.

Our design teams can identify when thermal modelling software, daylight assessment or building fabric analysis is required for U-value calculation or other aspects of building performance.
