Works to convert a locally listed former fire station in Dudley town centre into a modern bar and cafe were completed in summer 2015. BHB worked were appointed by Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council and carried out a full service, including feasibility studies, design appraisals and detailed design. We were also retained during the construction phase to ensure the works were carried out in line with the proposals and to the required quality.

The existing structure had been vacant for a number of years and had fallen into a poor state of repair. Water ingress had occurred in several locations which had caused both the external facades and internal finishes / structure to decay. The brief was to repair the existing structure and restore key elements, including the former fire station façade which had been crudely modified when the use previously changed to form a café.

Extensive repairs were carried out internally and externally as part of the £750,000 contract. A new copper clad first floor extension was formed to replicate the look of a water tower, and the existing brickwork recesses fronting the stone square were opened up with new curtain wall glazing secured. Internally, a glass observation floor was provided to showcase the archaeology below – the base of a former glass kiln which was an intrinsic part of the project. The new modern interior is sensitive in it's approach and allows the existing structure to be clearly defined.
